Alaska Airlines · fare drops

Does Alaska refund the difference if the price drops?

Usually, yes — with one important exception. On most Alaska tickets you can change to the same flights at today’s lower fare and the difference goes into your Alaska account wallet as credit. Saver fares are excluded: they are Alaska’s restricted fare brand and cannot be changed, which is the mechanism the whole thing depends on.

How to claim it

Open Manage Trip on alaskaair.com and change to the same flights at the lower fare. The difference goes to your Alaska account wallet.

Common questions

Is the difference paid back in cash?

No. It lands as credit in your My Account Wallet with Alaska, to spend on a future booking, rather than as a refund to your card.

Does it work on Saver fares?

No. Saver is Alaska’s restricted fare — the equivalent of Basic Economy elsewhere — and it cannot be changed, so there is no way to release the difference. Your confirmation names the fare you bought.

Do I need an Alaska account?

In practice yes, because the credit is held in your account wallet rather than issued as a standalone voucher. If you booked as a guest it is worth creating the account before you make the change.

Will a change fee cancel out the saving?

It depends on the fare rules on your specific ticket. Alaska shows any fee in the change flow before you confirm, so you can check the net result and back out if it does not clear.

How long does wallet credit last?

It has its own expiry, which Alaska states when the credit is issued — commonly about a year. Note the date, because the credit is only worth what you manage to spend before it lapses.

How would I know the fare has dropped?

Only by checking repeatedly between booking and departure. Farewatch automates exactly that: a daily re-price of the flights on your booking, and an alert when the gap is worth claiming.

You cannot check your fare every day. We can.

Farewatch re-prices the exact flights on your booking every day until you fly, and tells you the moment the drop is worth claiming — with the steps for Alaska Airlines already filled in. Check whether your ticket qualifies first: it is free, takes a minute, and needs no account.
